Sunset Beach Resort - Buenos Aires by Bike - How to Enter and Leave the City As a Cycling Tourist

There are several ways to access the city if you are travelling on two wheels. Many cycle tourist pass through Buenos Aires on their journeys of Argentina.

Highway

Trucks and buses, and you wouldn't want to join the mad rush of cars, if you are entering the city along the highway be careful on your choice of route as many major arterials don't allow cyclist. As any capital city in the world Buenos Aires drivers are not the most welcoming bunch.

If you are stopped by the police and your Spanish is a little rusty they are most likely asking you to get off at the next exit and to choose another road.

Buenos Aires Bike Lanes

They hate the bike laned streets as it slows them down so they will do anything to avoid them and thus they have a great working knowledge of where they are located, on arrival ask a taxi driver, alternatively! If you are staying in a hostel ask them before you arrive if they know of any bike lanes passing close by which you could follow. Well marked and well separted from the traffic stream they are a great way to access many points around the city center, bright yellow. Within the inner city area bike lanes are beginning to sprout up.

Train

Usually the last one, look for the bike symbol on the carriage. This is a popular way for locals to take their bikes to the riverside town of Tigre. If you are using the regional train system you can take your bike with you and place it in the specially attached bicycle carriage.

Boat

You will be the first off when the ferry docks, either way. The fast ferry will take you across the River Plate in one hour whereas the slow ferry will take three hours. The vehicle ferry of Buquebus will let you roll your bike into the vehicle loading dock. If you are coming or going via Uruguay you can easily take your bike with you on the boat.

Bus

But is must be packed correctly, occasionally with a small excess luggage fee, most bus lines will accept a bike as part of your luggage. If you don't want to tackle the highway on your bike but want to get out of the city hop on a bus leaving from the Retiro terminal.

Several of these stores are able to wrap your bike in cardboard and tape to protect it and to allow the bus company to load it. If you have long since lost your bike box head to the downstairs level of Retiro terminal where the parcel wrapping stores are located.

Just like an airline they will check in your bike and deliver it directly to your bus. Depending on which bus company you are travelling with you will often find they have a bulk package office in this downstairs section.

Take a look around and head back out to explore the backroads of Argentina, so get in. But the best cycling is in the countryside, buenos Aires is a city not to be missed.
